When you create a QR code using pbSmart™ Codes, you have the option of adding an image to your QR code pattern. This unique feature gives you a host of creative possibilities as you plan your QR code campaign.

There are two kinds of QR codes into which you can add images: Custom QR Codes, which are also referred to as designer QR codes, and
Branded QR Codes.

This article explains the difference between the two types of QR codes and helps you to understand when each of these would be most useful for your campaigns. For step-by-step instructions on how to create QR codes, see our related articles: How to Create a Custom QR Code, and How to Create a Branded QR Code.

Custom QR Codes vs. Branded QR Codes: What is the Difference?

A Custom QR Code, also known as a designer QR code, is a QR code with an image placed within the QR code pattern. Branded QR Codes are special versions of Custom QR Codes in which you use a logo or other brand image within the design of your QR code. Custom QR Codes and Branded QR Codes are available with pbSmart™ Codes plans “Standard” and above. With Custom QR Codes you can either upload your own image for use in the QR code, or you can choose from one of many images provided in QR code clipart. With each type of QR code, you have several placement options for your image.

The following images show examples of three kinds of QR codes to illustrate the differences:

When to Use Custom and Branded QR Codes:

Custom QR Codes and Branded QR codes have several things in common. They both include an image which helps your QR code stand out and sets you apart from the competition. This also helps increase the number of people who scan your QR code: customers are more likely to scan a code with an image that tells them what to expect.

Branded QR Codes are most effective in situations when you want to promote your company or product branding. Examples include: trade shows, where you could offer background information about your company; and in-store QR codes featuring product logos that provide additional product information for potential buyers.

Custom QR Codes or designer QR codes, can be used for many purposes and in many different QR code campaigns. Images on Custom QR Codes could include: a call-to-action to encourage customers to scan your code for a discount; a photo of a promotional giveaway like a travel mug or t-shirt; or an icon to explain what the QR code provides, for example a map or an email icon.

Between the two types, pbSmart™ Codes offers you unlimited possibilities to create original and effective QR code campaigns.
